Virginia R. Shogren passed away Wednesday, June 20, 2018 at the age of 79. She was born September 20, 1938 in Minneapolis, MN and moved to Sioux Falls, SD with her family as a young child. After graduating from Washington High School in Sioux Falls, she attended the Mississippi State University for Women earning a bachelor’s degree in elementary education. She began her career as an elementary school teacher in Ocean Springs, MS where she met fellow mid-westerner David Shogren. They were married June 17, 1962 and raised three children together. Virginia continued to teach part time after the family moved to New York state and was a sought after substitute teacher and tutor. Very active as a homemaker and mother, she also took community positions such as Girl Scouts troop leader and local government tax collector. She actively supported music education as chairman of the band booster club. She and David participated in square dancing and she served as co-president of Wayne Westerners Square Dance Club. She also served as a member of the board of the Sodus Bay Yacht Club. Virginia was always active with projects including painting, cross stitch, crochet, sewing, costume making, quilt making and sailing the Great Lakes with the family. Late in her life, she and David moved to DeWitt, MI to be close to her children and their families as well as to sail. She is survived by her husband, David; three children – Daniel, Sara, and Kenneth; three grandchildren, Tristan, Ian, and Kyra and one younger brother, Ronald. She was preceded in death by her parents and two older brothers, Robert and Richard. Memorial gifts may be made to the American Cancer Society.
